How to Take Your Daily Makeup Routine from Fresh Face to Evening

As fall transitions us to cooler months, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. This week, we’re welcoming Alexis of That Chic Lex to explain how she transitions her everyday makeup routine from morning to night – from fresh face to out on the town.

College students are busy people. Between cramming for your next exam, keeping up a social calendar and attending your weekly sorority meetings, I’m surprised there’s time to sleep – let alone do a full face of makeup.

That’s why day-to-night beauty routines are a college student’s go-to. Well, it’s definitely my go-to. Who has the time to apply makeup twice a day?

Day Look:

To create the foundation of your beauty routine, you’ll need the basics: BB cream, blush, highlighter and mascara. I also use an eyeshadow and a lip palette to add a bit of color. I’ve been loving this rust eyeshadow by L’Oreal (available at Meijer)! It adds the perfect amount of color to my overall look, but is understated enough to be appropriate for everyday activities. I can’t wait to rock this eyeshadow all through autumn!

Step 1: Apply Covergirl’s Clean Matte BB Cream to clean, moisturized skin. It’s the stuff girls with oily complexions dream about – including me! This product is lightweight and gives you just enough coverage, so it’s the perfect foundation for a fresh face look.

Step 2: Although my skin is pretty fair, I prefer rich colors when it comes to my makeup – which is why I chose Elf’s Dark Blush Palette to add some color to my cheeks. I opted for earthy tones like burnt orange and burgundy vs. summery pink shades, since it coordinated with my look and is the perfect transition into the fall season!

Step 3: Although I’m all about a matte look, highlighter is the key to fresh face makeup. I used NYX’s Born to Glow! Illuminator on my cheek bones to brighten up my skin and give it just a bit of sparkle.

Step 4: My favorite part about this routine is the eyeshadow. L’Oreal’s Monos Eyeshadow 306 is a soft, fall color, but it elevated my look nonetheless! Choose a neutral shadow that complements the color of your eyes and apply to each lid using a small makeup brush. You can even apply a small amount to the inside corner of your eye to really make your baby blues (or greens, or browns) pop.

Step 5: No look would be complete without a little mascara. One of my favorites is made by Elf – not only is it inexpensive, but it also works wonders! Apply to your top and bottom lashes to accentuate the eye-popping shadow you chose, and if a little gets onto your lids, don’t worry. Just grab a cotton swab and carefully remove the excess mascara.

Step 6: Finally, I can’t leave the house without some form of lip product. L’Oreal’s LA Palette gives me lots of different color options, including natural tones like nude, muted pinks and reds.

Night Look:

For any nighttime look, you only need to focus on accentuating one or two areas of your face. I typically choose to highlight my lips and eyes.

Step 1: When you’re headed out for the evening, eyeliner is a must. If you want to draw extra attention to your eyes, try adding some eyeliner where your lash line meets your lid. If you’re feeling extra bold, try a cat eye style! Just add a short swoop at the outside corner of your eye. My rule of thumb is to tilt the wing up so it’s even with the edge of my brow, but any size or length looks great for a night out.

Step 2: The final step for transforming your look from day to night is to choose a rich, dark color like L’Oreal’s Infallible Paints Metallics 336. I’ve wanted to try a metallic lip for quite some time, so once I saw this lip stain I knew it was for me! Bronze-y lips are the perfect bold trend to rock this season.
