Legally Blonde 3: Everything We Know So Far

Don’t deny it: Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde dominated the early 2000s. When the first Legally Blonde movie was released in 2001, viewers quickly fell in love with Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods—it made over $141 million in box office sales worldwide, eventually prompting the second film in the series.

Because Legally Blonde is often hailed as one of the greatest and funniest noughties comedies, it’s no wonder that fans have waited with bated breath for news of a threequel. Thankfully, we all got our wish. The franchise is slated to return to the big screen with a third movie, almost 20 years after Legally Blonde 2 hit theaters.

That puts the release date a full two years after the project was first announced. IMDB previously stated pre-production was expected to start in May 2020, but with the addition of new writers and the coronavirus pandemic delaying nearly every production, that date moved back.

Witherspoon first confirmed a third movie in June 2018.

Witherspoon took to Instagram to make the announcement that, yes, Legally Blonde 3 is officially happening. She posted a short video of herself in Elle’s sequined hot pink bikini, leisurely sunbathing on a pool float. “It’s true… #LegallyBlonde3,” she captioned the post.

Witherspoon donned the bikini back in 2016 to celebrate Legally Blonde‘s 15th anniversary, so it’s fitting she brought it back to confirm the third movie two years later.

Mindy Kaling is writing the script.

Deadline reported that Kaling will team up with Brooklyn Nine-Nine creator Dan Goor to pen the Legally Blonde 3 script. The pair last collaborated on a Kaling/Priyanka Chopra wedding comedy, which is in the works at Universal. Witherspoon also co-starred with Kaling in Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time in 2018.

In a recent interview with ELLE.com, Kaling opened up about the “really challenging” task of bringing Elle Woods into the 2020s. “Elle Woods is such an iconic character and so loved,” Kaling explained. “Ordinarily, I think I would actually not find that really fun to do because the expectations are set. But because we haven’t seen the character in 18 years, I was excited. We know what Elle was like when she was 21, 22 years old. But what about when she’s 42? That character, so innocent and girly, what is she like when she’s dealing with adult problems and is an adult woman? She’s not a little girl anymore.”

While the plot is being kept under wraps, Kaling teased about her collaboration with Goor, “We’ve loved working on it.”

Kaling and Goor’s script is said to be “an entirely new fresh spin” from a previous version of the screenplay, per Deadline. Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, the screenwriters responsible for bringing Amanda Brown’s book to the big screen back in 2001, were first tasked with writing the script, according to Deadline.

Witherspoon spoke about that iteration at the Big Little Lies season 2 premiere in May 2019. “[We have] a script, but we haven’t shot anything,” the actress told Entertainment Tonight. [Elle’s] a very beloved character. You just want her to go on a hero’s journey like she does in the first movie, and I’m having a great time working on it.”

The original producers are back.

Original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will work on the film. Witherspoon is also set to produce the film with her production company Hello Sunshine. There is currently no word on who will be directing the film.

Luke Wilson “would love” to do another Legally Blonde film, too.

As for the fate of Elle and Emmett’s romance, which was sealed with their wedding in the sequel? Luke Wilson, who played Elle’s lawyer husband, told Entertainment Tonight in May 2020 that he’s down to return to the role. “I have not talked to Reese about it, but yeah I always kind of hear rumors here and there,” he told the outlet. “Never anything official about them doing another Legally Blonde, but I’d love to do another one. I mean, just that character Reese played was so funny at the time and that has kind of become this iconic character now.”

Although Wilson may not be up to date on the status of a third movie, he has some thoughts about the script. “I would say they definitely have a few children and I just think that it’d be really funny if Reese had a little mini-me, a version of herself,” he told ET. “I would definitely think that they’d have a couple of children.”

The third movie will be “full of awesome feminist ideas.”

During an interview for The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon was asked to fill in the blank: “Legally Blonde 3 will be…” She said the new movie will be, “So much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. It will have returning cast members. We just need to film it first. But that’s my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3.” And as for Elle’s bestie Paulette? Witherspoon confirmed, “It will be the return of Jennifer Coolidge, which is the greatest.”
