Simple Fall Decorating Ideas for a Cozy Home or Apartment

As fall transitions us to cooler months, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips and makeup trends to hairstyles and home décor, we’re excited to see how these stylistas gear up for fall weather. This week, we’re welcoming Liz of With Wonder & Whimsy to share how she’s refreshing her home décor for autumn.

A neutral, all-season palette gives you flexibility with transitioning your home décor from one season to the next. One of my favorite color combos right now is blush, ivory and gold, since the soft hues create a space that feels airy, light, and clean. Believe it or not, blush functions much like a neutral. It can skew cool in the spring months when paired with pastels, or warm in the fall months when paired with rustic earth tones.

My living room features a warm neutral palette of ivory, beige, blush and wood. These are versatile hues that look great all year round – a blank canvas that allows me to play with different accent colors each season. For fall, I favor an earthier aesthetic. I like to accessorize with raw materials like wood and marble, plush and cozy textiles, and pops of autumn color. By incorporating decorative elements like pillows, candles, throws and accessories, you can easily update any space. I recently stopped into Meijer to shop their home décor department, so I’m sharing my picks and a few tips for a fall refresh.

Take Note of the Latest Trends

A simple way to refresh and modernize your space is to look at the latest trends. It’s fun to shop for something new and current and to incorporate it into your existing style. Rose gold is super popular right now, and mercury glass is an ultra-glam trend that pairs beautifully with rustic elements. I purchased a pair of lamps from Meijer to refresh my buffet and lend a warm, rosy glow to my living room. Plus, they fit with my all-season décor, so I can change how I style them throughout the year.

Add Pops of Seasonal Color

Color is my favorite strategy for refreshing a space. It’s such a simple way to reinvigorate a room, create a mood and transition your decor from season to season. An apple cinnamon candle brings a bold pop of red to the room and fills the space with autumn scents. A bouquet of autumn blooms rounds out the color palette with rich, warm tones. You can also make use of things you already have and curate your existing décor by color. Stacked books, board games, and glass bottles in shades of red and gold keep the palette focused and popping.

Incorporate Rustic Materials

For fall, I like to decorate with heftier, rustic materials like stoneware, pottery, wood and marble. These materials are also very trendy right now, and Meijer has a nice selection of accent furniture and accessories to help you shop the trend. I purchased a few pieces to update my collection and incorporate some earthy and eclectic elements into my space. The vase is a great all-season piece, but stuffed with colorful wildflowers, it makes the perfect fall bouquet. The cheeseboard is cut in a diagonal line, with one half wood and the other half marble. This is a really neat piece that’s both functional and stylish, the ideal canvas for a cornucopia of tasty fall snacks.

Accessorize with Plush, Cozy Textiles

Fall is the season of all things cozy. We like to hunker down with our pumpkin spice lattes, a good book and a cuddly blanket. Plush textiles like velvety throws and fluffy pillows add warmth and texture to a space. They’re functional but comforting, and really lend a welcoming, homey feel to a room.

Provide Warm Lighting

Decorating your home is all about curating a space to evoke a certain mood. And for fall, many of us want to feel warm and cozy. Lighting is another way to achieve this. It’s a simple and affordable way to create a welcoming respite from the autumn chill. Stylish lamps and flickering candles provide a soft, warm glow and romantic atmosphere.

Refreshing your space for the new season doesn’t have to be expensive or a chore. By incorporating a few new pieces from Meijer and using what you already have in creative ways, you can make your home a cozy and comforting retreat this fall!
