Jantzen was founded in 1910 as a small knitting operation and retail store in downtown Portland, Oregon. It was here that a rowing suit was produced becoming the prototype of early suits and iconically “the suit that changed bathing to swimming.” As early as 1921, Jantzen swimming suits were promoted nationally in Vogue and Life Magazine. Early billboards were seen in Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles featuring the red Diving Girl. The Diving Girl became the splash heard around the world and the 7th most recognized trademark in the 1930s. A Hollywood connection teamed up film stars wearing Jantzen swimsuits in Jantzen catalogues in turn crediting the studios and stars. In 1960 the “Just wear a smile and a Jantzen” advertising campaign was designed to appeal to women of all ages where for the first time photography was utilized rather than illustration. This new technique was just coming to the fashion forefront. The campaign was highly successful and the slogan was used for almost a decade. In the 1970s Jantzen continued to evoke a strong presence with both men and women’s offerings of swimsuits. An interest in glamour created diverse products to accessorize the swim line including caftans, patio dresses and cover ups. In 1980 Jantzen reigned as the world’s largest swimwear manufacturer with number one brand recognition. In 1992 Jantzen’s Clean Water campaign was revived with major retailers and worldwide organizations and included the first environmental billboard in Time Square. In 2007, a campaign to relaunch the brand featured super model Caroline Murphy in a suit called the Vamp which was inspired by an archive original. Here’s the thing about nude lipstick…everyone’s “nude” is different. The nude that’s perfect for your very fair-skinned best friend might leave you looking like you’ve been dead for 3 days. And your perfect nude might make your very fair-skinned best friend look as if she went on a Doritos binge and forgot to wipe her mouth. So finding your nude can be tricky. Luckily, we’ve got a few tips that should make the hunt a little less confusing.
- Texture – There are some options when it comes to texture: sheer, opaque, creamy, matte. If you try a sheer nude, for example, it will allow more of your own natural lip color to show through. Therefore, it’s more of a tinted lip balm than a nude lipstick. That means we’re looking for something opaque to make more of a statement. Next consider finish: creamy or matte? Matte is great when it comes to bold colors like red and fuchsia, but in a nude, matte can sometimes make your lips look chalky and dry. So start your search focusing on a creamy, opaque lipstick.
- Prep – Any lipstick looks better with smooth, exfoliated lips. In fact, you really can’t judge it at all if your lips are dry and cracked. True base layers (long-sleeved tops and bottoms with fitted ankles) are worn close to the skin and are form-fitting (but not overly tight), made from polyester, wool, synthetics, or a combination of all three, but not Cotton will retain moisture and but will not retain much-needed heat.
- Insulating layers – Worn over base layers, insulating layers should still be made of the same materials – wool, polyester, and synthetics – but are a bit thicker (not so thick you can’t comfortably move though). In more moderate climates, you might be able to skip insulating layers and simply double-up on base layers. This layer will be the one that you layer on and off as your temperature, and that of the outdoors, fluctuates. That means your insulating layer is best comprised of pieces with zippers and/or buttons (like these) for ease of use.
- Weatherproof layers – Your outermost layers will be windproof, waterproof, and breathable. On top, that means you’re looking for a good hard-shell jacket, with plenty of zippers for extra ventilation. Regular jeans or pants will work over your base layer, but in colder climates, you should add a pair of weatherproof or weather-resistant pants. Not only will they keep your pants and under-layer dry, but they help to cut the chill of the wind.
- Hats/gloves –In cold weather, your body first loses heat through your extremities. That means hats and gloves are definitely in order! Again, try to look for fabrics like wool, polyester, or synthetics, since they will hold the heat better than cotton. Hats and gloves should fit snugly …and fleece-lining never hurts. And, in this day and age, look for gloves with smart touch fingertips, so you won’t have to constantly be taking them on and off to use your phone.
- Boots/shoes – Footwear should be waterproof, with thick soles, and have a fit with a bit of room. The extra room not only helps with accommodating the thicker socks (hopefully wool) you’ll be wearing, but it will allow for warm air to circulate and keep those toes warm.
