Dress for your body shape

Feeling great and showing off your figure can make you feel on top of the world, right? Women come in all shapes and sizes but on the whole fall into four main categories. Read below and find out a little more about what dresses will suit and flatter your body shape best.

Hourglass:

If you fit into the hourglass category you will sport an ample chest, a smaller waist and full hips, you will be completely evening proportioned, and if mainstream media is to be believed this is the most desired body shape amongst women the world over.

Considered the classic feminine shape, you will have a defined bust, waist, bottom and neat hips and you will want to wear shaped and fitted clothes that follow the lines of your body, which defines your waist, enhances your bust and highlights your hips and bottom. Equally you will want to avoid anything that hides your body shape as this will add extra to your waist and make you look bigger than you are.

When choosing a dress for your body shape if you have an hourglass figure, short shift dresses or t-shirt mini dresses will look great, will not cling to your curves and also highlight your legs. Wrap dresses also wrap around your curves, highlight your waist and is very forgiving.

Circle/Apple:

The circle or apple body shape tends to retain weight in the mid-section, which might describe you if you tend to gain weight around your middle, or you are hoping to disguise some post pregnancy weight, ensure you choose a dress which fits loosely around your stomach area.

You will want to draw emphasis away from your waist and highlight your bust so wear dresses that flow from your bust and show off your undoubtedly great pair of legs. A shift dress is a great dress cut as they do not cling to your body as well as showing off your legs.

You want to avoid anything that highlights your midsection, so stay away from aware from belts or any dresses that cinch at the waist, anything with details around your bust, tummy and hips and any clothing that finishes at your fullest points.

Triangle/Pear:

You will be considered as having a pear/triangle body shape if you carry a lot of your weight on your bottom half, and have shoulders and a torso which is narrower than your hips so to accentuate your body shape you will need to wear styles that make your shoulders look broader and will therefore draw eyes upwards. Layering on your top half will draw eyes away from your fuller bottom half so wear pattern and color on your top half, this will make your hips and thighs seem narrower. You will need to ensure you avoid patterns on your bottom half and stick to block colors. With a pear shaped body it is important to accentuate your waistline and empire line dresses will suit your body shape well. You will need to avoid drop waistlines and miniskirts as these will highlight you bigger bottom half.

Rectangle/Column:

As a rectangular body shape you will have a small bust, hardly any waist definition and have flat hips and bottom so you will need to keep your silhouette uncluttered. Pick dresses with details on your hips and bottom as they may help to create gentle curves. Also, unstructured jackets will help to gently shape the waist. You will want to create the illusion of curves so it is best to avoid high-waist pants, belted jackets, straight lines and pinstripes.
