Justin and Hailey Bieber have been married since September 2018 (their first official wedding), and they appear to still be going strong. They’ve had their fair share of ups and downs over the year and certainly qualify as an on-again-off-again celebrity couple. These two have actually known each other since 2009, when Hailey’s father, Steven Baldwin, introduced her to Justin in the lobby of The Today Show‘s studios.
In a Friday interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Hailey told the late-night host that she remembers what went through her head when she met Justin when she was 13 years old.
“What’s funny is that in this photo, I’m super awkward. I had braces,” she explained. “Nowhere was there a thought that I was like, ‘Yeah, he probably has a crush on me.’ I did not—that was not the case at all. We just were hanging and [now] that is my entire husband. It’s ridiculous.”
There is actually video evidence of this interaction from 11 years ago.
In the video, Justin, then just a budding star, shakes his hair in Hailey’s direction, when Hailey, who looks less enthused, appears to shake his hand with about as much enthusiasm as an unimpressed teen girl can.
She told Fallon that when she met Justin she didn’t really know much about him. He and his mom ended up coming over for family dinner and a bowling outing with Hailey and her parents.
“To be honest, this is the truth. He was so new that I didn’t really know a lot about him yet,” she recalled. “It was really kinda before anything. I met him and his mom and my dad kind of just connected as friends and we invited them over to our house the next day. So him and his mom just came over for family dinner with me and my family and we went bowling.”
This seems like your run-of-the-mill awkward middle school interaction. These two are proof that things change. During her interview with Fallon, Bieber also revealed that the sparks started to fly between her and Justin (again) after her past interview with Fallon. During this 2018 Tonight Show interview, Hailey showed off her trick of opening a beer bottle with her teeth.
The next morning, after the interview had aired, I got a certain phone call from a certain someone,” Hailey told Fallon. “And it was a little like, ‘Hey, how are you? I saw you on Jimmy Fallon last night. You were looking really good. I loved that trick that you did. I had no idea that you can do that. It was so cool.’ Cut to, I’m now married to that certain someone.”
