5 Ways to Channel Your Inner Ballerina

Maybe it was a dream of yours as a little girl? Maybe you again had that dream as an adult, every time the opening credits for Sex and the City came on, and you saw Carrie strutting down the street in that iconic pink tutu? Or maybe you’re just a fan of that flirty, delicate, absolutely feminine style? Whatever the case, though you may not be able to twirl across the stage as a grand ballerina, you can certainly incorporate some of their style into your wardrobe!

The Tutu – For several years now, tutus have been a major fashion staple for kids. How great is it to see them wearing those adorable flouncy skirts, not just for special occasions or dance recitals, but as they would wear everyday shoes or a shirt? And now you too can bring these fantastic and girly skirts to everyday use! Adult tutus are actually made of multiple layers of softer tulle material, as tulle skirts. Their classic flared shape nips in at the waist, so they look great with fitted tops, like long-sleeved button up shirts and body-con scoop necks. Even a cropped sweater would look smart!

Ballet Shoes – Of course you can’t think of a ballerina without picturing those beautiful satin pointe shoes, with their silky wrapped ribbons. Since they are very stiff, with no soles, no arch, no padding (except for that in the toe), they are obviously not practical for everyday wear. But the pointe shoe trend has made its way into footwear! These Jessica Simpson flats are amazing, as are these ballerina-esque round-toe flats. And even if you decide on a quiet night in, you can rock a ballerina style with these socks!

Wrapped Cardigan – How chic are those fine-knit wrapped cardigans that ballerinas wear for after practice and rehearsals? Well that style is actually pretty much wearable as-is for your wardrobe right now! Again, since the wrap cardi will accentuate your waist, you can go quite loose with pants/jeans (bootcut or boyfriend would look fab), or pair it with a short circle or skater skirt and tights.

Jewelled Bodice – Grand ballerinas always have the most bedazzled and glittering bodices, all the better to catch the stage lights and shine on stage. And one of the best things about a jewelled bodice in your everyday wardrobe is that it pretty much eliminates the need for other accessories. For a fancy holiday party, try this trend in the form of a strapless A-line or empire-waist dress (you might even double-up on the ballerina style with a jewelled bodice and a full tulle skirt!).

Ballet Pink Makeup – When you say “ballet pink,” there is no mistaking that lush, pale pink hue. And much to our delight, you can find it in so many gorgeous makeup products. Lipstick, nail polish, even highlight and eye shadow! From Essie’s iconic “Ballet Slippers” to Bobbi Brown’s “Ballet Pink,” donning this lovely and feminine shade will definitely help to get your ballerina game en pointe!
