Why Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas Decided to Get Married in Las Vegas

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’s Las Vegas quickie wedding was a surprise to many convinced the two had been planning a summer wedding in France. But according to People, the French wedding is still happening, and the Vegas wedding was to make their marriage legal because of the rules surrounding marriage in France.

A source told the outlet that “they had to get married in the States to make it legal, but the wedding is still in Europe.”

According to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in France (via People), “at least one of the parties to be married must have resided in France for at least 40 days immediately preceding the marriage. This precludes a wedding in cases where both parties are only visiting for a short stay.”

Additionally, “in France, a religious ceremony does not constitute a legal marriage.” So to avoid dealing with that, the two just got married legally in the U.S. and will reportedly have their religious or symbolic ceremony abroad. Maisie Williams will still have her day as Turner’s maid of honor, after all.

Daily Mail spoke to Turner’s mother earlier today, who told them that her daughter gave her a heads up that the Vegas wedding was happening. “Sophie did call me before. She said, ‘Mum, I’m getting married in Vegas,'” Sally Turner said. “I am absolutely delighted and so is my husband Andrew.”

Turner’s mother also tried to dispel rumors that the two were going to get married in Europe this summer. “Don’t believe everything you read,” she said.
